Mr. Adam Sapp (Pomona College admissions director) will be visiting
Moloka'i for the first time ever this Thursday. He is visiting 15 high
schools this week on O'ahu, Maui, and Moloka'i. Here's a quick bio on
Adam:
Adam
wanted to visit MHS after admitting Sebastian Kahale Naehu-Ramos, who
is the first MHS student to attend Pomona in 26 years (I attended from
1987-1991). Kahale also received an amazing scholarship/financial
package from Pomona College that was twice the amount per year as his other admissions (Loyola Marymount, Pepperdine, USF, etc.). Kahale is loving SoCal and also started swimming at the NCAA Division III level. http://www.sagehens.com/sports/mswimdive/2016-17/roster (new roster not yet out).
Here's more information on need blind admissions:
Adam hopes to visit MHS every other year (2017, 2019, 2021, etc.). He will be hosting two events on Thursday:
1. Catered lunch for teachers
in Lisa Takata's classroom at 1220pm - what is "need blind," how to
write a winning letter of recommendation for your student, what elite
schools are looking for?
2. Student session in cafe
at ~115pm-200pm (kids who need to leave early can leave at 2pm). He
will probably need to move out of the cafe at 2pm--maybe he can answer
questions on the table outside of the MHS library? I highly recommend
freshmen and sophomores to attend. Please tell your students to go to
Adam's session in the cafe during CCR.
Adam really has a special place in his heart for RURAL students
(see bottom paragraphs of this 2017 New York Times article). He is
looking for rural kids for his college: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/01/31/education/edlife/colleges-discover-rural-student.html
